Why Teach?

I will be a teacher who is whiling to adjust for my students. I will acknowledge that all of my students are different from each other and will need different things from me throughout the year. I will be understanding towards things that matter in my classroom. In my word cloud I put together words and phrases that I believe are important for not only students but also teachers should have or use when in the classroom. I plan to pay close attention to my students and get to know them individually. I will be aware of my students behavior/ actions when they are around. I want my students to know that my classroom is somewhere they can consider a safe space. I will let them know I accept them even if they are different from their neighbor. We will discuss different cultures and different languages. I will emphasis how important it is to just be nice to each other.  Gender can affect the teaching profession in many ways. I never really paid attention to how at the elementary school I went to and other elementary schools surrounding there were close to no male teachers, if any at all. There were definitely men working as principles, superintendents, and other administrative positions. In the Harvard Edlast podcast they talk about how a woman being more emotional or if she shows that she may be soft, this shows that she can not or may not be ready to handle the leadership. But whenever woman show the characteristics that are more so considered for males, like being more aggressive those woman a criticized. This is based off of the bar that society has set for everyone. Hopefully one day it will not matter what gender you are to be able to do what you love. No, schooling is not equitable but there are many ways to help fix this problem. Teachers play a big part in helping make sure schools are equitable because we are the ones teacher. It is our job to properly give out information to our students, but how do we do that when teachers do not talk about the tough things. I believe we should talk about how different we all are from one another, which is fine. We should discuss how everyone is unique and different in their own way. We are allowed to have different views from our neighbors while still getting along with them. We should talk about how different our cultures are from each others so we can all start to look at things from others perspectives. Teachers should also talk about and show different teaching methods to students. All students should know that not everyone learns or thinks the same, so it is alright to ask for help about assignments. While going through this week’s module, it was easy to see that myself as well as many other people do not have the full picture. We only discussed a few things that are not fully talked about, and there is still so much more that should be included. I would have liked to have heard these stories when I was in high school, but I only remember some from junior high. And I’m junior high I was not that interested in the stories. We have already discussed how different cultures history should be taught in school, to see how life was for everyone. So reading and listening now about how the full story may not always be told is not surprising. The Tiktok about Ruby Bridges is probably what surprised me the most. I was just so shocked that I have never heard the that much detail about what she went through at such a young age.
