Stories: Whose are told and whose remain in the margins?

 This is something that I have not thought that much about so I am glad it is one of our topics. History was probably one of my least favorite classes in school, because of the environment. Hearing stories in history class it seemed like the white men were always doing something good and the black people were there to make their lives easier. I rarely heard stories about hispanics and definitely not many about Asians or Pacific Islander, if any. I believe students should hear about the history behind all cultures because of how different everyone lived. It is important that students know that there was more going on than just what the people they are familiar with were doing. There are many important people in every culture and we should not limit students to the popular historical people. How do we talk about issues that matter?

 It is important for students to know what is going on in the world around them. Some issues that need to be discussed in the classroom can be tough to bring up and have a discussion about. I believe that it is our jobs as teachers to make sure that we are able to have those difficult talks in the classrooms. To make these discussions easier to have I believe having good respect in the class will help. We as teachers should emphasize how important it is to respect one another no matter how differently we may think from our neighbors. Having respect in the classrooms to the point where all students feel more comfortable will not only make talking about issues easier, but it will also be a better classroom environment overall. It is very easy for students to feel singled out or different from their classmates when the majority of the class feels the complete opposite.
